How to compare funeral costs fairly
A useful comparison starts with the same service at each provider. An advertised cremation price and a funeral with a viewing are different purchases.
Choose the arrangement first
Decide whether you want direct cremation without a ceremony, cremation with a memorial, or burial with a funeral. Keep optional ceremony choices separate from the essential arrangement so that quotes remain comparable.
Ask for the complete written total
Give each provider the same collection address and explain whether care is needed now or in advance. Ask for an itemized total covering transport, care, paperwork, cremation or burial services, containers and third-party charges.
Check the items that change the price
Ask about distance limits, after-hours collection, refrigeration days, certificates, county charges and the return of cremated remains. For burial, ask separately about the cemetery plot, opening and closing, marker and any outer container.
Keep a record of the quote
Save the date, contact name and list of included services. Ask how long the quote remains valid and what could change it. Our directory prices are a starting point; the provider must confirm your actual arrangement.
